ITT Pilates Instructor Highlight: Sue Aslin

Take us on your journey to becoming an ITT Pilates instructor.

I came into Pilates after many years as a dancer and dance teacher. Like many dancers, I had numerous injuries and alignment issues to work on. Very soon after my first class at Studio M Pilates, I knew I had to become a trainer and spend the rest of my life doing Pilates! When I decided to take the ITT Pilates training, I had no idea how blessed I would be to have such a valuable education in Pilates taught by some of the best movement professionals in the industry! After a few years into my teaching career, it became clear that the quality of instruction, the detail about the movements, and the nuance taught surrounding alignment, mechanics, and assessment far surpassed many other Pilates certification training programs.

I started teaching for Madeline Black at Studio M in 2004 and studied with her intensively for 10 years. I purchased Studio M from Madeline in 2014 and have been carrying on in her legacy ever since! In 2020, I felt it was time to move to the next stage in my career by returning to my roots at ITT Pilates. I approached Jean Sullivan about becoming a teacher trainer and began working as an apprentice and soon after as an ITT instructor!

Outside of ITT Pilates, what are you teaching?

Like the ABOW studio, Studio M also offers instruction in Gyrotonic. As a movement professional, I was attracted to this modality's brilliant quality of movement. As a result, I became certified in Gyrotonic in 2010 and now teach both Pilates and Gyrotonic at Studio M.

What is your favorite part about working with ITT Pilates?

I love seeing the students develop and embody a solid understanding of the Pilates movements and seeing them grow and evolve into competent instructors!

What is a quote or piece of advice that keeps you motivated and passionate about teaching and Pilates?

"The ultimate aim is to be at home in one's body, to be at home with the nature of one's self and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience." Juliu Horvath, creator of the Gyrotonic Method
